How to Check Your Car Model & Variant Before Buying Accessories

Not sure which version of your car you have? Learn what to check before buying custom-fit floor mats, boot liners, dash mats, sun shades and other car accessories.

Buying custom-fit car accessories should start with one simple step: making sure you know exactly which version of your vehicle you have.

Knowing that you drive a “2025 SUV” or even knowing the make and model may not always be enough. Depending on the accessory, differences in generation, body style, trim, powertrain or seating configuration can affect fitment.

Before ordering car floor mats, boot liners, dash mats, sun shades or other custom-fit accessories, here’s what you should check.

Start With More Than Just Make & Model

Make → Model → Generation/Series → Year → Body Style → Powertrain → Trim → Configuration

You won’t always need every detail. For some accessories, make, model and year may be enough. For products moulded around a specific part of the vehicle, however, a few extra checks can help you choose the correct version.

1. Check the Model Year

Start with your vehicle’s model year and compare it with the compatibility range shown on the product page.

For example:
2021–2024
or
2025–Onwards

Pay particular attention if your vehicle is from the first or last year of a listed range.

Manufacturers sometimes introduce a new generation or facelift during a changeover period, so two vehicles registered around a similar time may not necessarily have identical designs.

Fitment tip: If your car is near a model changeover year, compare the product photos with your vehicle rather than relying on the year alone. Feel free to contact us for assistance.

2. Identify the Generation or Series

Many vehicles have a generation or series code in addition to their model name.

These codes help distinguish one generation from another, especially when manufacturers continue using the same model name for many years.

When an X-CAR product title specifies a particular generation or series, check that it matches your vehicle before ordering.

3. Check the Body Style

The same model can sometimes be sold in multiple body styles, including:

  • Hatchback
  • Sedan
  • Wagon
  • SUV
  • Ute

Even when the front of two versions looks similar, the rear of the vehicle can be completely different.

Body style is especially important when purchasing products such as boot liners, rear sun shades and other accessories shaped around the rear of the vehicle.

If a product specifies Hatch, Sedan or another body style, make sure you select the version that matches your car.

4. Check Your Powertrain

Confirm whether your vehicle is:

  • Petrol
  • Diesel
  • Hybrid
  • Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)
  • Electric (EV)

Don’t assume different powertrains automatically share the same floor and boot layout.

On some vehicles, the location of batteries and other components can change the shape or height of the floor, boot or underfloor storage area.

If the product page specifically identifies a powertrain, such as Petrol Only or PHEV, treat this as an important fitment requirement.

5. Check Your Trim or Badge

Your vehicle’s trim level or badge can help identify differences in factory equipment.

Depending on the model, different trims may have features such as:

  • Head-up display (HUD)
  • Premium audio system
  • Additional boot speakers
  • Different seats
  • Different centre console
  • Different dashboard equipment

You can usually find the trim or variant in your vehicle paperwork, original purchase information or manufacturer specifications.

However, don’t rely on the badge alone if the product page also provides comparison photos. Visually checking your vehicle is often one of the easiest ways to confirm the correct option.

6. Does Your Car Have a HUD?

This is particularly important when buying a dash mat.

A head-up display (HUD) projects driving information into the driver’s field of view. Vehicles equipped with one may have a dedicated opening or raised section on top of the dashboard.

If a dash mat is available in With HUD and Without HUD versions, look at the dashboard directly in front of the driver and compare it with the product images before selecting your version.

Remember: A small dashboard difference can require a completely different dash mat pattern.

7. Check the Number and Layout of Seats

For SUVs and people movers, confirm whether your vehicle is a 5-seater, 6-seater, 7-seater or 8-seater.

Seat configuration can affect floor mats, boot liners and rear cargo accessories.

Don’t just count the seats. Look at how they are arranged. Two seven-seat vehicles, for example, may use different second-row arrangements or seat rails.

Third-row operation also matters when choosing a boot liner. A multi-piece boot liner may provide more flexibility where individual sections need to move as the rear seats are raised or folded.

8. Check Your Boot Configuration

Before buying a boot liner, open the boot and take a good look at the cargo area.

Check whether your vehicle has:

  • An upper or lower boot-floor position
  • Underfloor storage
  • A spare wheel
  • A side storage compartment
  • A factory subwoofer
  • Third-row seats
  • Different side-panel shapes

If the product page shows more than one boot version, compare these areas carefully.

A small difference around a speaker, storage compartment or floor level can change the shape required for a custom-fit boot liner.

The above image shows the two variations of boot liners for different boot configurations of Kia Sportage NQ5 PE series 2026-onwards.

9. Check Factory Floor Mat Fixing Points

When buying custom-fit car mats, look closely at the driver’s footwell.

Many vehicles have factory retention points designed to hold the driver’s mat securely in position.

Check:

  • How many fixing points there are
  • Where they are positioned
  • Their shape or attachment style

Then compare them with the product images.

If the floor shape appears correct but the fixing points are noticeably different, double-check your vehicle variant before ordering.

10. Compare the Product Photos With Your Vehicle

This is one of the simplest and most useful fitment checks.

Don’t rely only on the product title.

Use the listing photos to compare the actual shape and features of your vehicle.

For Car Floor Mats

  • Floor contours
  • Driver’s footrest
  • Centre console edges
  • Factory fixing points

For Boot Liners

  • Overall boot shape
  • Left and right side contours
  • Speaker or storage areas
  • Boot-floor height
  • Third-row seat layout

For Dash Mats

  • HUD opening
  • Air vents
  • Speakers
  • Sensors
  • Dashboard shape

For Sun Shades

  • Window shape
  • Quarter windows
  • Rear windscreen shape
  • Door configuration

For Centre Console Organisers

Compare the actual console compartment and surrounding shape rather than relying only on the vehicle model.

Product photos can often reveal a version difference much faster than the model name alone.

What If You’re Still Not Sure?

If you’ve checked the listing but still can’t determine which version fits your vehicle, contact us before installing or modifying the accessory.

Providing complete vehicle information can make compatibility checks much easier.

Photos can also be very helpful. For a dash mat, send a clear photo of the complete dashboard. For a boot liner, photograph the whole boot with the cargo floor visible. For car mats, photograph the footwell and factory fixing points.

The goal is to identify the physical version of the vehicle rather than relying on one piece of information.

A Few Minutes of Checking Can Make a Big Difference

Custom-fit accessories are designed around specific areas of a vehicle, which is exactly why identifying the correct version matters.

Instead of relying only on the make, model and registration year, look at the details relevant to the product you’re buying and compare the listing photos with your vehicle.
